Counseling

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

What to expect from an initial conversation, an individualized therapy plan and ongoing review of your goals.

The first appointment

A clinician may ask about what brought you to care, symptoms, daily function, history, strengths, safety and preferences. You can ask about confidentiality, fees, telehealth, credentials and the approach used. Share at your own pace; ask why information is needed.

Make a plan together

Therapy can support coping, relationships, emotional regulation and recovery goals. The plan should reflect your needs and relevant evidence, not a one-size-fits-all promise. Ask how progress will be reviewed and what happens if the approach is not helping.

Coordinate when needed

Some people benefit from other medical or community services alongside therapy. With consent, providers can coordinate referrals and follow-up. Counseling is not a replacement for emergency care, medication management or a specialist assessment when those are needed.
