Start with a conversation
You do not have to wait for a crisis to discuss alcohol or drug use. A clinician can explore your goals, health, mental-health needs, medications, safety, strengths and supports. An assessment is broader than a screening and guides an individualized plan.
Understand the continuum
Outpatient and telehealth therapy may fit some needs; others require medically supervised withdrawal care, medications or a higher level of treatment through appropriate providers. Matching care is a clinical decision. Never stop heavy alcohol or benzodiazepine use suddenly without medical advice.
Stay connected
Individual therapy, therapy groups, peer support and family involvement with consent can complement each other. Peer support draws on lived experience and is not a substitute for clinical treatment. Discuss privacy expectations before joining a group.
Return without shame
A recurrence of substance use is a reason to reassess support, not proof that recovery is impossible. Contact the care team, review safety and adjust the plan. After a period of reduced use, lowered tolerance can increase overdose risk. Suspected overdose requires 911.
