Offer calm connection
Listen without demanding a detailed account of what happened. Reassure the child about the support available now without making promises you cannot keep. Reactions differ by age and situation.
Restore predictable routines
Regular meals, sleep routines and manageable activities can provide structure. Offer reasonable choices and explain changes ahead of time. Caregivers can seek support for their own stress.
Seek help for ongoing difficulties
Contact a qualified professional when distress persists, daily function declines or safety concerns arise. Evidence-based youth trauma treatment can involve caregivers where appropriate. Use crisis services when help is urgent.
